Creating a Library for Generations of Astorians and Clatsop County Residents

We need your support! Our library was built 50 years ago, when libraries were designed as little more than repositories for books and periodicals. The citizens of Astoria have told us they need a building they can be proud to call the community hub.Libraries are so much more than books - they create community, provide invaluable services, open pathways to success, allow for creative and innovative thinking, and encourage thoughts, ideas, and activities that benefit our entire county.

Why do we need to raise this money? Updating outmoded buildings and creating space for generations of community requires safe, efficient, and current systems. Your donations will be used for:

  • Greatly expanded public access to digital information and technology.
  • Spaces, materials and programs for youth, from toddlers to teens.
  • A cultural hub, a place to convene and converse about the questions of the day.
  • A library that connects the community, and not just within the building. The renovated building will draw more people to the area, with the spillover effect of revitalizing Duane Street.
  • Natural light and comfortable spaces
  • Places for conversations and small meetings.
  • Places to study alone and places to collaborate.
  • Library's services accessible to everyone in the community, not just those able to climb stairs.
  • An electrical system that will support the media of today and the future.
  • Expanded access to Astoria's past and the library's rich historic collection.

Above all, the citizens of Astoria want the library to be a place of inspiration and aspiration for Astorians of all ages, all backgrounds, all abilities, and all interests.

The achievement of these goals will require renovations and upgrades to the building, furniture, fixtures, and equipment that are estimated to cost $6.5 million. The City has earmarked approximately $1.5 million for this task, which will not require increased taxes or new debt. The Foundation has pledged to raise $5M more from local and other sources. We know that contributions of whatever amount from as many Astoria residents as possible—young and old—will be essential in encouraging larger funding sources. That's why we are focused right now on raising money in town. Please give what you can. It's really true that every little bit helps!

The Astoria Oregon Public Library Foundation is an independent, tax-exempt organization formed and led by volunteers. The Foundation's goal is to raise resources for and assist the City in the renovation of our public library. Please donate, volunteer, or attend one of our upcoming events. Everything counts as we build the new library for everyone, together!
